TOTUMO IS VERY HARD AND DURABLE, BUT IT IS NOT WATER RESISTANT. WATER WILL NOT DESTROY TOTUMO, BUT PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO WATER AND SUN MAY CAUSE THE COLOR TO FADE OR THE PIECE TO DAMAGE, BEND OR CHANGE ITS SHAPE.
TOTUMO or GOURD is the fruit of the tree of the same name that grows in Central America and the Colombian Amazon. Its fruit has a strong round or extended crust that becomes hardened when it is mature. The ripe fruits once dry and clean inside, are used as containers (totumas) to hold water or liquids. During the pre-Columbian time the natives, Mocanás, who inhabited the centre and the south of the Atlantic province (department) used the crust of totumo to make canteens called Totumas in which they stored milk and water.
Artisans cut, dry, clean, dye, polish and engrave the fruits to make beautiful One of a kind pendants, earrings and various handcrafts.
