BAMBOO - There are more than 1400 species of bamboo. In the Americas there are around 290 different species. Some are as short as one foot (30 cm) in height while others can grow to hundred times that size. The root structures of bamboo plants vary and they are often scientifically classified by root type. Many different climates support bamboo, although it is commonly associated with the tropics. In Colombia and Ecuador Bamboo prospers in fertile regions up to 2,000 meters (7,000 feet) above sea level. We know little of how many Bamboo species grow in Columbia. However, Guadua is well known and has 2 popular names - "Guadua macana or Guadua macha."
Açaí or Acai pronounced [asa’i], /ah-sah-EE or ah-shi-ee is a fast growing palm which contains eight species that are native to Central and South America. These palms grow mainly in swamps. The fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched panicles of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. The fruit has a single large seed about 0.25–0.40 inches (7–10 mm) in diameter. The exocarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of açaí and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp, which contains a seed with a diminutive embryo and abundant endosperm. The seed makes up about 80% of the fruit.

The Acai pulp is used for consumption. Acai seeds are washed, cleaned and dried. A hole usually 2 mm in diameter is drilled, then the seeds are dyed in the desired color and finally polished. After having the materials ready, artisans put together unique and beautiful designs. These unique pieces are fairtrade by Pueblito.
