FIQUE is a natural fibre that grows in the leaves of the Furcraea andina - the fique plant. It is native to Andean regions of South America. This material is also used to make hammocks, ropes and also sacks for agriculture purposes.
Açaí or Acai pronounced ([asa’i], /ah-sah-EE or ah-shi-ee) is a fast growing palm which contains eight species that are native to Central and South America. These palms grow mainly in swamps. The fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched panicles of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. The fruit has a single large seed about 0.25–0.40 inches (7–10 mm) in diameter. The exocarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of açaí and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp, which contains a seed with a diminutive embryo and abundant endosperm. The seed makes up about 80 per cent of the fruit.
The Acai pulp is used for consumption. Acai seeds are washed, cleaned and dried. A hole usually 2 mm in diameter is drilled, then the seeds are dyed in the desired color and finally polished. After having the materials ready, artisans put together unique and beautiful designs. These unique pieces are obtained through Fairtrade by Pueblito.
